Sunds digester and defibrator
Western Michigan University Pilot Plants have the only available pilot scale vertical digester in the United States. The Sunds Digester can be used to make thermo-mechanical pulp from conventional wood chips or other non-wood plant fibers. The unit operates in a batch process and can be configured to allow kraft cooks or caustic extraction cooks. Bio-digestion research can be in the areas of:
- Wood fiber pulp properties
- Non-wood fiber pulp properties
- Lignin and extractives removal
- Cellulose and hemicellulose hydrolysis
- Defibration and reject percentages
The digester vessel has a max capacity of 69 gal (262 L), max steam pressure of 120 psi (8.27 bar), max temperature of 338 ºF (170 ºC). The throughput is variable depending on multiple factors including liquor: chip ratio, cook time, yield, etc. and can be cumulative when making multiple batches in 24/7 operations.
