Sunds digester and defibrator
Western Michigan University Pilot Plants have the only available pilot scale vertical digester in the United States. The Sunds Digester can be used to make thermo-mechanical pulp from conventional wood chips or other non-wood plant fibers. The unit operates in a batch process and can be configured to allow kraft cooks or caustic extraction cooks. Bio-digestion research can be in the areas of:
- Wood fiber pulp properties
- Non-wood fiber pulp properties
- Lignin and extractives removal
- Cellulose and hemicellulose hydrolysis
- Defibration and reject percentages
The digester vessel has a max capacity of 69 gal (262 L), max steam pressure of 120 psi (8.27 bar), a max temperature of 338 ºF (170 ºC). The throughput is variable depending on multiple factors including liquor: chip ratio, cook time, yield, etc., and can be cumulative when making multiple batches in 24/7 operations.
